Head Bangin’ 80’s

Good luck to METAL SHOP listener David McCrary in New Orleans who is on his way to the ‘Kong Off’ competition in Denver, Colorado, a National ‘Donkey Kong’ Contest of the top 12 players in the world.

Yes, he is one of the 12 best and gets his inspiration from 80’s Metal… he streams METAL SHOP whenever he plays the game. In fact, his nickname for the contest this weekend is ‘Power Metal’.

David alerted me two years ago that he had been playing the original 1981 Donkey Kong arcade machine in his garage and attempting to get a Top 5 world record score. He achieved that goal a year later, becoming the fourth player to achieve an officially-verified score of over one million points on a Donkey Kong arcade machine.

He has noted “I can’t play without METAL SHOP being on and I stream my video gameplay over Justin TV. Several watchers have inquired about the music and all have became fans of the station and listen to Live365 now. Thanks for the awesome music, I couldn’t have done it without the jams.”

Frank Sinatra may well be spinning in his grave over the heavy metal hijacking of a dozen cornerstone numbers from his repertoire for “Sin-atra,” but given the testosterone-drenched machismo that was central to the way he lived his life and sometimes sang, there’s actually a certain twisted logic to this shotgun marriage. We love ‘Heavy Metal Parking Lot’ and word is the guys behind it (Jeff Krulik and John Heyn) have another mid-80s heavy metal home movie about to be released titled ‘Heavy Metal Picnic’.

This one is set in 1985 at the “Full Moon Jamboree” in Maryland, a weekend field party bacchanal that took place at The Farm, which was home to a cast of colorful characters who lived and partied alongside unamused neighbors in the McMansions of Potomac.

This party was so crazy, it made the evening news and much of it was recorded using a home video camera and a stolen CBS News microphone swiped from the Reagan inauguration earlier that year.

If our favorite bands from back in the day have gone clean and their rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle, big hair and outrageous dress sense were more memorable than the songs they wrote (as this writer claims), why do we still listen to this stuff?

The music industry has changed drastically since the decade of decadance… and certainly not for the better.

Many of today’s artists are just plain boring 🙁
