80’s Metal/Hair Bands
Excitement is building for the special 30th Anniversary Edition of Judas Priest’s signature record ‘Screaming For Vengeance’. The CD/DVD combo contains not only the remastered original album with bonus tracks, but also a live performance from the 1983 US Festival, filmed in San Bernadino, CA on May 29, 1983.
Mayhem Festival 2012 featuring Slipknot, Slayer, Motorhead, Anthrax, and eight other kick ass bands, hit the San Manuel Amphitheater in San Bernardino, California on June 30, 2012. METAL SHOP’s day began as we watched some of the opening bands such as White Chapel and Asking Alexandria, but our ‘mission for the day’ was ANTHRAX, MOTORHEAD and the mighty SLAYER!!!!!
Anthrax headlined the Jagermeister stage and played the classics (Indians, Madhouse, I Am The Law and more). Shadows Fall drummer Jason Bittner filled in for Charlie Benante (hand injury). Charlie is hoping to be back with the band in a week or so. The Anthrax set was short, but it rocked hard and had the crowd moshing all over the dust bowl.
As we were waiting for Motorhead, Jagermeister presented an award to a war veteran for his heroic acts of bravery in Afghanistan. Unfortunately, it would be the last photos of the night for me because my camera shutter took a shit and stopped working… But it didn’t stop us from enjoying a kick ass set by Motorhead. Lemmy, Phil and Micky Dee blasted through the catalog that included ‘Damage Case,’ ‘Ace of Spades’ (see video below) and ‘Overkill.’ Lemmy’s voice was strong and the band sounded awesome. It was also great to see all the young people seeing Motorhead for the first time and getting to know what real rock music is about!!!
Slayer took the stage next, opening with ‘Disciple.’ The Slayer stage was set-up with two Marshall stacks shaped like upside down crosses that shot out flames. They played a few older songs like ‘Die By The Sword’ and ‘Hell Awaits.’ Gary Holt is still playing with Slayer and will continue until Jeff Hanneman has recovered from a near-fatal spider bite he suffered last year.
In all, the festival was a success with attendance of 26,000+ Metal Heads!!!!! m/ Here are a few photos (Anthrax) and Video….Special thanks to Adrenalin PR for the hook up!!! Enjoy -Ralph Cartel

On December 6th, METAL SHOP celebrated eight years streaming on the web via Live365.com and we’re thrilled to be one of the most listened to Rock Stations Online in the ‘metal’ genre.
A ‘Big Thanks’ to everyone who tunes in daily from your desktop at work or increasingly, with your smartphone or other mobile device. Live365 makes it easy with free mobile apps, so you can listen anywhere, even in your car!
So you get the audio on your mobile device, but what about the 80s Metal Hair news and other content available on the desktop version of the METAL SHOP website? Certainly, it’s tough to navigate on your iPhone or Droid.
As a result, a simpler version of the site was implemented using mobile website builder ‘DudaMobile,’ a free service that allows businesses and individuals a quick and easy way to convert their desktop site to a mobile site in only minutes.
Now, when you visit www.metalshoprocks.com or sister station Hair Band Radio at www.hairbandhits.com on your mobile device, you will be automatically forwarded to the mobile site, that features a lot of the cool stuff on the desktop version, including news items, photos, videos and more.
If you haven’t done so, please check it out. Your feedback is appreciated.
Thanks again for listening and Happy Holidays!
With so many shows (Judas Priest, Anthrax, Megadeth) and events (Ozzy book signing, That Metal Show, Black Sabbath Reunion Annoucement), I hadn’t had a chance to read the new Tony Iommi book “Iron Man: My Journey through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath” from De Capo press until now.
Formed in 1969 by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler and Bill ward, Black Sabbath became one of the biggest bands in the history of Rock and Metal. Iommi’s book covers Black Sabbath from the early days in their native Birmingham, England to the height of their careers, including all the drug use and band in-fighting that went with it. From Ozzy being fired by his bandmates to Iommi getting arrested in Modesto, California for not paying child support, I found this book an interesting read and for Black Sabbath fans, a must have.
Thanks to Tony Iommi for signing my copy at the recent press conference in Hollywood on 11-11-11, the day Black Sabbath announced they will reunite for a tour and new album in 2012.
METAL SHOP Rocks was again invited to a taping of VH1 Classic ‘That Metal Show’ (Season9).
The first show taped was an hour long interview with AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson. Don, Eddie, Jim and Brian talked about many things, including a good story that Brian told on how he wrote the lyrics to “You shook Me All Night Long.”
The second show included Guests Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), Rex Brown (Pantera) and Vinny Appice (Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell). Mustaine talked about his recent neck surgery and showed the guys the scar on his neck. Dave said he felt great and was looking forward to getting back on tour in support of the new Megadeth album TH1RT3EN. Rex and Vinny took the stage next and talked about the new band they formed called Kill Devil Hill. Their first album will be out in March, 2012.
Can’t forget special guitar guest Warren DeMartini (Ratt) made an appearance. Here a few photos from what we were allowed to shoot. Special thanks to Emily at VH1 and Jesus Martin for all their help.

Ozzy Osbourne is holding several book signing events in California, Nevada, Arizona and Texas in support of the release of his new book, Trust Me, I’m Dr. Ozzy: Advice from Rock’s Ultimate Survivor, featuring memoirs of some of his most famous survival tales during his 4o-year career.
The book was released October 11th and METAL SHOP’s Ralph Cartel attended the first book signing at the Barnes & Noble on Edinger Avenue in Huntington, CA.
October, 1981: James Hetfield responds to a classified ad in Los Angeles placed by drummer Lars Ulrich and METALLICA is officially formed. There was a beginning and the first 10 years featured some of the greatest rock music ever recorded.
As the band starts their fourth decade, there isn’t one person on planet Earth who hasn’t heard of METALLICA as they have become the 7th biggest selling musical act in American history.
With their accomplishments noted, the accolades are rightfully coming their way, but in the end all that matters is the music. In honor of METALLICA turning 30, Guitar World Magazine polled their readers for the ’30 Greatest Metallica Songs of All Time.’
It is certainly no surprise that the top 10 on this list and 23 of 30 tracks were all created and released in the 80’s on METALLICA’s first four albums. However, it is amazing when you consider these songs were exposed primarily through word-of-mouth, receiving zero radio airplay until the 90’s after the release of the Black Album.

Queensrÿche drummer Scott Rockenfield says the band didn’t come up with many alternatives when it came to naming themselves.
“We started as a covers band playing Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, all the fun stuff. But with Geoff Tate singing with us we were able to play the more challenging songs. We were called The Mob but that didn’t last long.”
“We finished the four-song EP and realised we didn’t have a name, so someone suggested we combine the words from our tune Queen of the Ryche, and that was it.”
“It sounded powerful and fitted with the direction we wanted to head.”
